THE JOG | Omeleto Drama

A man goes for a jog. THE JOG is used with permission from Joseph Lee Anderson. Learn more at https://imdb.com/name/nm5121352. One morning, a young Black man wakes up and gets some wonderful news: he's been accepted into his local police academy, which will set him and his family up with some degree of security and help assure his future. He carries that feeling as he goes about his day, starting with his routine morning run. During his run, he sees someone who needs help and attempts to provide some assistance at the scene. However, his altruistic gesture goes awry, and he finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, as a promising morning takes a distinctly wrong turn. Writer-director and lead actor Joseph Lee Anderson's sharp, pointed drama could be called a slice-of-life story in its opening moments, shot with an eye for the ordinary moments in life and a muted, naturalistic style. But this life isn't at all average, with its fractured, fractious legacies of race and violence, which play out in a tense, ultimately stunning way. Shot in a hand-held one-shot, the short yet intense story unfurls in real-time, setting up just enough information and offering minimal yet revealing dialogue to get to know the main character. His choices and background reveal a man with aspirations and a drive to help his community and family. The storytelling is pared down, but its essentials possess touching tenderness and humanity. The visual approach, staging and pacing work well together to throw both its main character and the audience into a tense, unsettling situation, which escalates quickly as a quiet, happy morning erupts into a cacophony of violence -- and the main character finds himself the victim of a terrible yet all too common situation in modern-day America. THE JOG is incredibly quick-paced, agitated in style and serious in intent, and at the end viewers may find themselves struggling to process what they've used seen as it happened so quickly. Seeing how rapidly situations like those in the film play out underscores just how easy it can happen, and how one miscalculation or misreading can pile up, to tragic effect. But the pace is one of the strengths of THE JOG: split-second reading of situations don't offer a lot of time and space to parse out our biases, and split-second decisions are made with the "background programs" of our assumptions and beliefs running in our minds at all times. And it only takes a split second to fire a gun, and end the hopeful future of a promising young man.

The Interview | A Psychological Thriller Short Film by Barnaby Roper

From legendary fashion-filmmaker Barnaby Roper (Kanye, David Bowie, Chanel) a taut psychological thriller short film. When a candidate interviews for a new job at an "unorthodox" firm, the process quickly turns into a boundary-breaking process of social control. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shortoftheweek Twitter: https://twitter.com/shortoftheweek THE INTERVIEW A Catwizard Films Production Directed by Barnaby Roper https://www.barnabyroper.com/ "On its surface, the film is a straight forward two-hander—a young system analyst, skilled in forecasting, is interviewed for a new job. Typical conversations on qualifications and methodology follow, but quickly give way to increasingly personal questions, as the interviewer (Rory Kinnear) prods and pushes the candidate (Billy Howle) outside his comfort zone with seemingly inflammatory and non-sequitur inquiries that verge on sadistic. Kinnear’s character is careful to be “reasonable” with his questioning. At several points, he stops the conversation to ask for consent to continue. However, the phrasing and context of the request is a challenge—is Howle’s character tough enough—man enough—to continue? The firm values “mental resiliency”, so to demur is to seemingly concede the argument that one is mentally weak. Thus they continue, despite considerable anguish. What Roper appears to be evoking is a dystopian program at the corporate level, imagining a future (present?) where the inherent power imbalance between firm and employee bleeds into bizarre experimentation on a path to total control. If exaggerated, it is only subtly so—the film is so effective because it is speculative only by degree, rather than by concept. We are all familiar with modern capitalism’s fetishization of culture fit, and, especially in ambitious sectors, that frequently demands insane working hours, 24/7 digital availability, and a willingness to debase oneself at the mercy of superiors. What Roper and screenwriter John Dover imply is how pernicious the progrom is, and how employee complicity in their own exploitation is a figurative fig leaf for something darker in society. Roper has had an illustrious career in image-making, having previously worked with the likes of Kanye West, David Bowie and with brands such as Nike, Dior, and Chanel. His work is typified by gorgeous fashion photography married to inventive post-production techniques that play with composition in fresh ways. I was first introduced to his work when curating the 2012 Vimeo Festival, where his work, Rêve, was nominated in the fashion category and I instantly fell in love. However, in the past couple of years, Roper has extended himself towards storytelling, beginning with My America, a 17min documentary project that received a Vimeo Staff Pick. Now The Interview has arrived and Roper mentions he is working on another short film as well as two feature projects. Commerical directors sometimes struggle with the transition to scripted, but his collaboration with Dover, and the smart writing evidenced by this short, make me optimistic for Roper’s future work in narrative. We’re excited to see what’s next." - S/W Curator, Jason Sondhi CREDITS DIRECTOR: BARNABY ROPER PRODUCER: MIKEY LEVELLE WRITER: JOHN DOVER CAST: RORY KINNEAR, BILLY HOWLE DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY: SIMON CHAUDOIR EDITOR: MATT NEE CASTING: GEMMA SYKES COLOURIST: SIMONE GRATTAROLA EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: TOM BERENSDEN POST PRODUCTION: JOE WHITE, JESS GORICK, SERGE MIOT 1ST AD: STEVE WINGROVE CAMERA CREW: FOCUS PULLER: CHARLIE ENGLAND 2ND AC: MOLLY BURCHAM GRIP: DAVID BRADSHAW GAFFER: CHRIS RAWORTH RUNNERS: STEVE CHARALUMBOUS, JACK PUNCHER D.I.T.: ASHLEY HICKS, MATT HICKS SOUND: SOUND RECORDIST: MARK KESHISHIAN SOUND DESIGN: TRZTN SOUND: BENZENE SOUND MIXER: LOIC CANEVET SUPERVISOR: BENJAMIN DESPLANQUES ART DEPARTMENT: PRODUCTION DESIGN: SAM TIDMAN STYLIST: JENNY COGAN ART DEPT. From intergalactic quests for long-dead Earth cuisines to pioneering mind transfer procedures, the seemingly limitless opportunities for narratives in these universes makes these films some of the most exciting and much-loved shorts we feature on our site. With its high-concept premise and surprisingly relatable narrative, Tunnelen (The Tunnel) by Troll Hunter director André Øvredal is another fine addition to our science-fiction collection. Initially, the premise for The Tunnel doesn’t seem as exciting or visionary as the aforementioned films, as a story following a family on a car journey back from the beach doesn’t feel like prime fodder for a futuristic fable. However, set the trip in an overpopulated world, where drastic, indiscriminate action is taken to reduce the number of its inhabitants and suddenly you’re presented with a dystopian vision that turns a mundane commute into a tense and gripping watch. The method of population reduction is the titular tunnel – described as ‘Depopulation without Discrimination’ in Alice Glaser’s original short story The Tunnel Ahead – which seemingly shuts every so often and eradicates all those trapped within. Though Øvredal’s reimagining doesn’t include the level of backstory as Glaser’s, which importantly provides context as to why a family would go through the tunnel in the first place, it ramps up the tension and feels like an even more condensed and frantic version of this terrifying tale. “I loved the way the short story used an extreme science fiction situation to talk about a very normal family situation”, the director explains as we discuss why he decided to bring Glaser’s story to the screen. “The parents need to have “adult” conversations, things they need to hide from the children, while in a very tense environment. It felt both real and scary”. Aiming to create a film full of suspense, featuring only a family sitting completely still inside a car, Øvredal shot The Tunnel in a green screen studio in Oslo, with everything outside the car (even the road) added digitally afterward. “We only had one car”, he reveals as I ask about his production methods, adding that they “constructed the car like a 4 piece “cake” so we could pull out sections of it to access with the camera”. Setting his film within a futuristic vehicle certainly doesn’t limit the scope of Øvredal’s film. Though I bemoaned it for not having the same level of backstory as Glaser’s original tale, there are subtle nods (the father eying a fellow traveler’s drink, the graffiti on the rear of an advertising board) to the larger world beyond. And ultimately, although the film doesn’t explain why they risked their lives for a short trip to the seaside, not having it spelt out for you leads your imagination down some dark and twisted paths. I mean, just how bad must their lives in the city really be?" - S/W Curator Rob Munday Director: André Øvredal Producer: John Einar Hagen Script: André Øvredal, Alice Glaser (short story) Camera: Nicholas Müller-Osborne Editing: Patrick Larsgaard Sound: Daniel Angyal / Bård Farbu Music: Johannes Ringen Animation: Actors: Siri Helen Müller, Kyrre Haugen Sydness, Max Amundsen, Maria Dingsøyr-Henriksen Reproduced on this channel with the permission of the filmmakers.
